Megan Velong

is an interdisciplinary artist and hairstylist passionate about community, human connection, and our relationship to environment.

As an artist, Megan holds a degree in Visual Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. Her art practice spans photography, sculpture, everyday actions and gestures of care.

Megan launched Civic Collaborations in 2021, as a social art practice and community organization based in Red Hook Brooklyn as a response to the very issues that we face today in communities; socially, economically, and environmentally, and to collaborate with others on the questions that drive her work and philosophy.

Civic asks itself and its collaborators to engage with the questions: What if the most radical thing we could do was to form caring and generous communities? How might our communities function as sustainable social economies? How might caring for someone or something else help to support those unsupported by other social systems? Civic is built on the belief that care for one another and care for our environment are interdependent; and when performed build a sustainable future. Storytelling, Music, Walks, Movement, Collective Action, and Ecology, are at the core of Civic's modes of inquiry, action and ways of knowing.

Her experience spans more than 18 years in hairstyling working with salons such as Van Michael Miami, Arrojo Studio, and Soon Beauty Lab. Her work has been seen in New York Fashion Week, Miami Swim Week, and MTV Music awards. As a stylist Megan creates haircuts with natural movement & texture and color that’s believable. Appointments can be booked through Civic Studio, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY.
